But what happens to them if those same objects make their way back into the air? Researchers at Duke University have created a new device that can detect and catalog microplastics. Researchers have been working to find ways to clean up plastic pollution in the oceans and elsewhere since the early 1980s, when scientists first identified microplastics in the world's seas. So far, much of that focus has been on making microplastics biodegradable or a more easily-detectable color than its primary white color. But more importantly, scientists have only just begun to understand the specific impacts of microplastic pollution. "Even microplastics, so tiny, is affecting a lot of organisms," says Olivia Deutsch, co-author of the new study in the journal Environmental Science and Technology. "It impacts everything from fish, to birds, to marine mammals, to organisms that don't even get their name in English, because no one has really worked out what they are." In the new study, Deutsch and her colleagues describe a new machine they created that does for the first time what they describe as a "complete and thorough inventory of airborne particles" of plastic. It's a "convenient," portable, and inexpensive device that performs a number of functions. It's a small device that can fit into the palm of a hand, and it's easy to store and transport. It's also inexpensive -- it cost under $2,000 to make. Its major limitation is that it can only perform its main task if it is "located in a low wind area, where particles can settle." Most notably, Deutsch says, the device can count, identify and count every plastic object it finds, from microfiber to chips and any type of plastic-based product. "Our device is the first of its kind in terms of capacity," Deutsch says. "We don't have anything to compare it to, because no one has made anything like this before." So far, the device has been used to catalog plastic debris in the air over a 20-year period in a 8e68912320 MultiImageDownloader =========== The application is an all-in-one image grabber that allows you to download several graphic files at once.
